PACIFIC RESOURCE PARTNERSHIP APPLAUDS U.S. ATTORNEY INDICTMENTS

Charges For Hiring Illegal Aliens Are a Welcome Development

HONOLULU - Kyle Chock, executive director of the Pacific Resource Partnership, stated his organization's support for the actions taken by the U.S Attorney's office in prosecuting the company where 43 illegal aliens were arrested in July. The U.S. Attorney charged two employees of The Farms, Inc., a Central Oahu agricultural business, with criminal activities related to the hiring of the illegal workers.

Chock stated, Ed Kubo issued a warning that he would take the initiative to punish employers using unlawful practices in hiring illegal workers, and he has made good on his promise. This is a much-needed first step in addressing the issue of illegal employment in Hawaii, and we look forward to seeing these same law enforcement tools applied to the construction industry where the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency and U.S. Attorney's Office have also made multiple arrests of illegal workers.

Those who employ illegal workers are the core of the problem. They are the ones taking jobs from local workers and giving them to illegal aliens who can be easily exploited. Employers practicing unscrupulous and fraudulent practices have become an industry-wide problem in this state and have inflicted a lot of pain on Hawaii residents and our economy in this tough economic climate, while the unemployment rate is skyrocketing.

The Pacific Resource Partnership (PRP) is the joint Market Recovery program of the 7,600 member Hawaii Carpenters Union, Local 745, and its 220 signatory contractors across the state.

After more than 20 years of groundbreaking effort, PRP is now recognized as an innovative leader in labor relations, business and economic development and community-based initiatives to improve the education, employment opportunities and quality of life of generations to come in Hawaii.

Welcome to the Play Fair in Hawaii Website

Play Fair in Hawaii is a campaign to encourage contractors and developers who do business in Hawaii to play by the rules that govern the local construction industry. The majority of contractors and developers in our state conduct business in a legal, ethical, safe and conscientious manner. Unfortunately, there are some in our community who flaunt local rules and hiring practices and violate our laws and island values.

These unscrupulous contractors engage in illegal hiring practices, fail to adhere to safety codes and play fast and loose in other ways to increase their profits at the expense of Hawaii’s skilled workers and consumers. They also gain an unfair competitive advantage over reputable, law-abiding companies. Play Fair in Hawaii was established to expose these practices and hold those who engage in them accountable. We invite you to join us in this effort and help us preserve fair labor practices and quality construction standards in Hawaii.
